Ramps

Field Experience #4: Ramps will be a foraging adventure in the Wisconsin forest. The event will take place at a secret location that has an abundance of ephemeral spring ramps.

Artist and educator Michael Legan will teach us how to identify and sustainably harvest wild ramps. We’ll spend time discovering and collecting them - you can even take some home for cooking experiments and for sharing with friends.

Then our harvest will be transformed into a communal meal of traditional Alsatian flammkuchen, made in a special oven built by Michael and his brother. Stay and spend the afternoon with people making flammkuchen and exploring the land. We’ll have a creative activity for everyone or you can wander, meditate by the creek, take field recordings, document the maple syrup farm, take a sensory walk in the woods...

Here are a few important details:

  • The location will be shared with you once you’ve signed up. The land is 1.5 hours from Minneapolis (less time from St. Paul).

  • We’ll get started around 11:30 (we recommend leaving Minneapolis at 10:00)

  • We are coordinating carpools so if you don't have a car or would like to minimize driving, we’ll help make these arrangements.

  • We will stay and hang out all afternoon - stay as long as you like!

  • Everyone is welcome, and we think kids would especially like this adventure.

Like all events, this one is free, but there are a few things you'll want to bring:

  • This event will be BYOB - booze, blankets (or chairs), and bug spray (for ticks).

  • Bring picnic supplies (we’ll provide plates, napkins, and forks) and any additional food items to accompany the flammkuchen (i.e. things you would also pair with pizza).

  • Personal shovels (small hand shovels are best) to harvest ramps and gardening gloves to protect your hands

  • There is a creek you can walk through to reach another lot of ramps, so if you wish to be extra adventurous bring tall rubber boots or shoes that are good for walking in water.
